I’ve been waiting for the U Visa for two years. How much longer should I wait?
We know that sometimes waiting while our immigration application is processed can be a cause for concern, because time passes and we do not receive a response.
It is important to remember that in some cases, it is possible to estimate how long the application might take, while in others, the process may take longer than expected.
At Quiroga Law Office, PLLC, we tell you what you need to know about U Visa waiting times.
How much longer should I wait if I have been in the U Visa process for two years?
First, you must keep in mind that the U Visa is one of the most requested by immigrants, as it grants benefits to those who have been victims of certain qualifying crimes.
Because of this, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) receives many applications for this visa annually, and they can reach up to 50,000 applications in progress.
Taking this into account, the process to receive the visa can take between 4 and 5 years, so if you have already been waiting 2 years, you must arm yourself with patience because it could take a couple of years more.
And why does the U Visa take so long?
The main reason is that the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) issues only 10,000 U Visas each year.
Then, once this cap is reached, all other applications are placed on a waiting list until the next period.
We recommend you consult with an immigration lawyer before starting any process to study the details of your case.
