How long in advance should I renew my residency?

The renewal of residence is an important and necessary procedure for all legal permanent residents of the United States and doing it on time can avoid problems in the future.

In the first place, to determine how much time in advance you must renew your residence, it is necessary to know the type of residence you have.

For example, if you have a permanent residence valid for 10 years, you must apply for renewal six months before the expiration date of your Green Card.

On the other hand, if you have a conditional residence valid for 2 years, you must request the removal of the conditions 90 days before the expiration date of your Green Card.

Keep in mind that if your Green Card does not have an expiration date, you need to request its renewal, as this means that you have a very old version of the Residence Card, and it is necessary to replace it.

Is renewing the same as replacing?

The answer is no because these are two different procedures that immigrants do before the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS).

In the first place, the renewal of residence is requested when the expiration date of your Green Card is close. On the contrary, the replacement of the Green Card must be requested before USCIS for one of the following reasons:

  1. You need to change some information on your card
  2. You lost your card
  3. Your card was stolen or damaged
  4. Your Green Card does not have an expiration date
  5. Permanent residence was acquired before the age of 14 as soon as this age is reached.
