The Emotional Balance We Immigration Lawyers Need in Turbulent Times
As an immigration lawyer practicing in Washington State, I understand the importance of maintaining emotional balance amidst the turbulent political landscape. Our country is experiencing a delicate moment with the threats and policy changes proposed by Donald Trump, including mass deportations and border closures, juxtaposed against the politically unstable situation of President Joe Biden.
In a recent interview with Parriva, I shared my firsthand understanding of the hardships faced by immigrants. As a native of Colombia, I migrated to escape the civil war, leaving behind my family, culture, and heritage. I arrived in the United States without speaking English, but my determination led me to graduate with honors from Gonzaga University in both undergraduate and law programs.
In just nine years, I not only mastered English but also became an entrepreneur, created my own business, bought a house, and became a U.S. citizen. I attribute my success to the opportunities provided by this country, yet I remain a staunch advocate for fair immigration reform.
“This country needs immigrants, not only for labor but for their economic contributions,” I stated during the interview. I acknowledge the overwhelmed state of immigration courts and the border, where judges often dismiss asylum seekers’ stories due to the sheer volume of cases.
I stress the necessity for emotional resilience in our profession. “Hearing the stories impacts us, but we must recognize the legal limitations while continuing to fight for justice. I’d rather have nightmares about a judge’s decision than do nothing,” I said.
I criticize the use of immigrants as political pawns, calling for a significant reform to address the bureaucratic and political hurdles. “Recognizing and approving a deep immigration reform is a good start,” I concluded, expressing hope for the future while acknowledging the challenges that lie ahead.
